Storing Pallets in Florida's Humidity
How to Prevent Mold, Warping & Pest Damage

Florida's year-round heat and humidity create unique pallet storage challenges that do not exist in most other states. Pallets stored improperly in Florida can develop mold within 72 hours during rainy season, warp significantly within weeks from humidity cycling, and become homes for ants, termites, and other pests that then enter your facility. These problems are entirely preventable with the right storage practices.

This guide covers the specific pallet storage challenges in Florida's climate and the practical steps to prevent mold, warping, and pest infestation.

Why Florida's Climate Attacks Pallets

Pallet Lumber & Sawmill Operations

Stamped kiln-dried pallet lumber, bulk warehouse stock, dimensional yard inventory, raw softwood logs, and sawmill operations - the supply chain behind every custom and standard pallet we ship.

Florida averages 54 inches of annual rainfall (highest in the contiguous US after Louisiana) with humidity regularly exceeding 80-90% during summer months. Wood pallets are hygroscopic - they absorb and release moisture continuously. In high humidity, pallets absorb moisture, boards swell, and nails loosen. When a rain shower hits outdoor pallets and then the sun bakes them dry, the rapid moisture cycling accelerates warping, joint failure, and checking (surface cracks). The warm temperatures also accelerate mold growth: mold spores germinate on damp wood within 24-48 hours at 70-90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Outdoor Pallet Storage Best Practices

Outdoor storage is sometimes unavoidable, but follow these practices to minimize damage:

  • Always elevate pallets off the ground on dunnage or pallet feet - ground contact accelerates moisture wicking and provides pest access
  • Cover stacks with tarps or pallet covers - a basic UV-resistant poly tarp dramatically reduces moisture cycling
  • Orient stacks to maximize airflow - avoid packing stacks tightly against walls or each other
  • Limit outdoor dwell time to 30 days maximum during summer rainy season
  • Inspect for mold and pest activity weekly during May-October

Mold Prevention and Treatment

Visible mold on pallets destined for food-grade applications is a compliance failure. For standard warehousing pallets, surface mold is an aesthetic issue that can be addressed with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) spray and air drying before use. However, heavy mold penetration into the wood grain indicates moisture damage and structural compromise - those pallets should be removed from food areas and downgraded or scrapped. Prevention is far cheaper than remediation: proper storage covers and dwell-time management eliminate the problem before it starts.

Pest Control for Pallet Storage Areas

Termites, carpenter ants, and wood-boring beetles are attracted to wood pallets, especially in outdoor or partially covered storage. Do not stack pallets directly against your building exterior - maintain at least a 12-inch gap. Regular pest control perimeter treatment around pallet storage areas is standard practice for Florida operations. If you discover termite or beetle activity in a pallet stack, quarantine and remove those pallets immediately to prevent spread to your building structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

In Florida's climate, 30 days maximum during rainy season (May-October) without degradation if properly covered and elevated. In the dry season (November-April), properly covered pallets can store 60-90 days without significant quality loss.
Surface mold on non-food-contact pallets is a cosmetic issue that can be cleaned. Mold on pallets destined for food-grade or pharmaceutical applications requires removal from those areas. Structural mold penetration (soft, crumbling wood) means the pallet is compromised and should be scrapped.
ISPM-15 heat treatment kills existing pests and organisms at the time of treatment, but it does not prevent future mold growth from airborne spores in humid storage. Kiln-dried lumber (lower initial moisture content) is more mold-resistant than green lumber, but storage practices matter more than wood treatment type for preventing mold in Florida.

Operational details for this market

Compliance specification

Kiln-dried hardwood meets NWPCA Uniform Standard for Wood Pallets; moisture content verified <19% at dispatch, blade-cut deck boards, no visible bark.

Florida regulatory context

FDA registered facilities in Lakeland and Jacksonville require pallets that meet FDA 21 CFR 178.3520 indirect food additive specification; our food-grade stock is tested for compliance every 90 days.

Florida Department of Transportation hauler permits restrict pallet loads above 80,000 lb GVW to specific corridors; our DOT-permitted carriers handle the routing.

Pallet specification detail

ISPM-15 export pallets receive heat treatment to 56C core temperature for 30 minutes; stamping shows IPPC logo, country code 'US', registered facility number, and treatment code 'HT'.

Lumber spec for new GMA stock: mixed hardwood (oak, maple, ash, hickory) with minimum 600 SG (specific gravity); kiln dried to <19% moisture; visible defects limited to wane on outer 1/3 of deck board only.

Delivery and logistics

Drop-trailer programs maintain a customer-dedicated 53-foot trailer on-site; we swap full-for-empty on a scheduled 24/48/72-hour rotation; preferred for high-throughput dock operations.

Customer use case

Construction supply yards (Home Depot, Lowe's distribution) move lumber and hardware on 48x40 GMA in 5,000+ pallet weekly cycles; we supply both the inbound load pallets and the return-stream recycled stock.

Pricing context

Lumber index pricing: we benchmark against the Random Lengths southern yellow pine #2 index for hardwood-blend spec; updates monthly; standing-order pricing protects against +/-15% market swings.

Sustainability

Our Lakeland and Jacksonville recycling streams process 200,000+ pallets per year; broken stock is repaired or chipped for mulch (sold separately); zero-landfill goal targeted for 2027.
